This memorial complex at Dražgoše village commemorates the efforts of the Cankar Battalion in the 1942 Battle of Dražgoše, where Partisans took on the Germans in heavy snow while attempting to protect local population from being deported to concentration camps.
Battle of Dražgoše between Slovene Partisans and Nazi Germany armed forces started the 9th of January and ended on January 11, 1942.
After suffering heavy losses the Nazi forces set fire to the village, shot 41 hostages, and deported the remaining residents.
In 1976 the Dražgoše War Memorial was built just outside the village to commemorate this battle and the destruction of the village.
