A Black Man’s Portrait in Town’s Coat of Arms

The legend says that a landowner Abraham from Bavaria, has been traveling through the Poljanska Valley with his servant, a black man. In the dark forests, they encountered a giant bear.

The Servant Killed the Bear

Prince Abraham stopped and the servant snatched the bow and killed the bear. The master hugged the servant and said, “You saved my life, my servant. For your bravery, I will reward you in such a way, that even the late generations shall know what kind of hero you were.” As a sign of gratitude, he included the profile portrait of the servant in the city coat of arms.

On the edge of the seal from the 14th century there is the inscription: SIGILLUM CIVITATIS LOK – seal of the town of Škofja Loka.
